Wool pellets as organic fertilizer: What the science actually says

What are wool pellets and how do they work?

Wool is a naturally nitrogen-rich fibre – roughly 10% nitrogen by weight, with around 50% carbon content. What did the study actually test?

Researchers from Universidad Santo Tomás in Chile planted lettuce seedlings in three different soil types – sand, clay, and peat – and added wool pellets at two doses: 5 g per litre of soil and 10 g per litre, alongside a control group with no pellets. They tracked soil moisture, nutrient levels, and plant growth over 120 days.

The wool pellets used were lab-analysed before the trial: 10.2% total nitrogen, 48.6% carbon, and 4.2% potassium oxide – a solid nutritional profile for an organic amendment.

Soil moisture improved dramatically

One of the most striking findings was how much wool pellets improved water retention – especially during dry spells. Across all three soil types, the treated soils held significantly more moisture than the control.

In sandy soils, wool pellet treatments increased moisture by 3-7% compared to untreated soil, with the higher dose retaining the most – particularly from week 7 onward when rainfall was minimal. In clay soils, moisture retention was consistently 7-10% higher in pellet-treated pots. And in peat soils – which already have good water-holding capacity – the highest dose delivered a remarkable 25% increase in moisture retention by the end of the trial.

This is exactly the kind of result that makes wool pellets as an organic fertilizer so relevant for growers facing unpredictable rainfall or water restrictions. The pellets act as a buffer, keeping soil moisture levels more stable even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Nutrient levels went up too

It wasn’t just water. The study also found meaningful improvements in soil nutrient availability, particularly for nitrogen and potassium – two of the most important nutrients for leafy vegetable growth.

In sandy soils, nitrate concentrations increased by 41% in the higher-dose treatment compared to the control. In clay soils, available nitrogen rose by 54%. Potassium also climbed significantly – up by 10% in sandy soil, 40% in clay, and 53% in peat.

Because wool decomposes slowly, these nutrients were released gradually – which is exactly what plants need for steady, sustained growth. This gradual release is driven by soil microbes breaking down the wool’s organic matter, which also boosts biological activity in the soil more broadly. Healthier soil biology is always a win for long-term fertility.

Plant growth results were significant

The proof is in the plants. Lettuce grown with wool pellets – especially at the higher dose – outperformed the control group on every growth measure.

The most dramatic results came from sandy soil, where plants are typically most disadvantaged by poor nutrient and water retention. Fresh weight jumped from 21.6 g in the control to 53.7 g – that’s 2.5 times heavier. Leaf count increased from 19 to 26 per plant. Plant height grew from 12.5 cm to 17.6 cm. And chlorophyll content increased by over 80% compared to the control – a strong indicator of better photosynthesis and overall plant health.

Clay soils also showed meaningful improvements. Peat – already nutrient-rich – showed smaller but still positive differences. This makes sense: the less fertile the starting soil, the more room there is for improvement, and the more clearly the wool pellets’ benefits shine through.

Importantly, plants in sandy soil treated with the higher dose reached similar weight and leaf counts to those in peat – despite peat being a far richer growing medium. That tells you something powerful about wool pellets’ ability to compensate for poor soil quality.

Where wool pellets work best

The study is clear: wool pellets as an organic fertilizer work best in soils with lower inherent fertility and moisture retention – particularly sandy and clay soils. If you’re working with nutrient-poor or free-draining soils, wool pellets could make a very real difference to your yields.

In high-organic soils like peat, the benefits are still present but less dramatic.
